CSIR Current Vacancies – Systems Administrator

Job Description:

The CSIR has a vacancy for System Administrator in the Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC) area, within the National Integration Cyberinfrastructure System (NICIS), which is hosted by Next Generation Enterprises and Institution cluster. The incumbent will be responsible to maintain a Tier2 computing infrastructure for the WLCG, and for setup and ongoing support of virtual machines (VMs), user database and OpenStack cloud infrastructure. The position is based in Cape Town.

Job Responsibilities:

• Contributing and identifying appropriate use and operational best practices
• Lead projects on new or upgrading systems
• Back-up servers and associated operating systems and software
• Deploying, managing, and operating cloud environments
• Proactively keep up to date on cloud services and developments
• Provisioning and de-provisioning VMS and cloud accounts
• Collaborate with colleagues internationally to maintain Tier2 computing infrastructure
• Conduct research on HPC and cloud related hardware and software in support of procurement and system development
• Maintain a Tier2 computing facility for the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG)
• Lead certain data/service migration projects
• Demonstrate leadership in either field of HPC/Cloud (storage, cluster/cloud design and configuration, interconnects or applications porting and tuning)
• Keep technical documentation up to date
• Create (where appropriate) automation, to streamline provisioning and de-provisioning processes

Job Requirements:

• Experience in scripting tools, bash, python, yaml etc
• Industry certification in related ICT field would be advantageous
• Experience with High Energy Physics computing infrastructures
• Experience with software defined storage systems, EOS/CEPH/GlusterFS
• A National diploma or Bachelor’s degree in information technology or related field (e.g. computer systems engineering, computer science) with at least six years’ experience in LINUX system administrator of which five years should be in HPC or cloud
• Knowledge of programming (e.g. C, C++ and Fortran)
• Experience with Database administration
• All international qualifications require an evaluation report / certificate issued by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA)
• Experience with batch systems, HTCondor or similar
• Experience in large, distributed collaborations
• Experience with configuration management via ansible/puppet/salt/chef
• Experience with massively distributed systems and high throughput computing
• Experience provisioning, operating, and maintaining Cloud Infrastructure
