Job Description:
The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and foster innovation in support of the agricultural sector. It provides diagnostic, laboratory, analytical, agricultural engineering services, post-harvest
technology development, agrochemical evaluation, consultation and advisory services, food processing technology services as well as various surveys and training interventions. Through its wider network of research institutes and experimental farms, the ARC provides a strong scientific base and a broadly distributed technology transfer capacity to the entire agricultural industry in South Africa.
Job Responsibilities:
- Initiating innovative research projects and strategically position these research project(s) nationally and internationally from own research.
Lead and support a team to initiate innovative research projects and strategically position these research project(s) nationally and internationally. - Actively sources new national/ international research opportunities, writes proposals and earn sustainable external income.
- Defines the project life cycle which defines the work that must be accomplished, what deliverables must be achieved, who must be involved, what other resources are required and how each phase should be managed, controlled and approved.
- Operational planning of targets and deliverables for all the research project(s) in area of responsibility for own and team’s research.
- Managing finances and optimisation of sustainable external income for projects within area of responsibility, including the negotiation of project proposals with research funders,
- Identifies long-term budget requirements and be accountable for compiling, monitoring and managing project budgets. Develop business cases for all project expenditure requirements.
- Development of research grants for national and international funding and providing support to research team for the development of research grants for national and international funding
Job Requirements:
- Proven record of accomplishment of research leadership as a principal researcher in the specialised field of expertise with extensive publication record.
- Meets peer norm requirements for specific field of expertise, with a minimum (on average) of four peerreviewed publications per year.
- Minimum 40 peer reviewed publications at date of appointment.
- Proven record of accomplishment for generating external income for programme and projects in programme.
- Proven record of international funding and participation in international projects. At a minimum be the PI or SA lead.
- Proven record of accomplishment of being an invited international speaker or being involved/invited as a participant in international events of high importance.
- Proven record of accomplishment that expertise and scientific standing is acknowledged at international level.
- Proven track record of mentoring and supervision/co-supervision of other researchers and students’ development. Supervise or co-supervise two Post docs, three x PhD and four x MSc every 5 years with an emphasis on critical and scarce skills. At a minimum 10-15 students (Post docs, PhD and MSc) graduated under supervision/co-supervision at time of appointment
Qualification & Experience:
- PhD or DSc in Agriculture/ Crop Science/Agronomy/Plant Physiology/Soil science/Botany or related/relevant
qualifications in plant production/propagation/cultivation.
Experience in field of crop production/agronomy/plant physiology/cultivation/propagation of crops and product development is key. Experience in the field of medicinal plants will be an added advantage - More than 10 years’ experience in a relevant scientific research environment, post PhD or DSc and a proven international record of accomplishment in the related discipline for the specific position.
