Job Description:

The position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) Office of Management. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the FSIS Public Health Officer in Occupational Medicine, addressing the occupational medical needs of FSIS employees by planning, developing, administering, and evaluating a medical monitoring program.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the expert in FSIS occupational health issues and medical spokesperson on behalf of FSIS on issues related to occupational medical concerns.
  • Advises and consults with FSIS officials, USDA officials, other Federal and State Agencies, and local medical practitioners on issues related to occupational health concerns.
  • Evaluates report findings, recommends treatment, and ensures that treatment is received.
  • Develops policies and guidelines for occupational safety and health programs.
  • Establishes procedures for the systematic identification and testing of employees whose work assignments involve exposure to known and unknown communicable diseases, and other occupational related illnesses.
  • Makes formal determinations on such issues as: medical conditions of employment; accommodations for employees who have been potentially and/or actually exposed to serious diseases and illnesses.
  • Manages medical records, tests, and reports.
  • Interprets statutory and regulatory guidelines and mandates.
  • Develops strategic short and long-range plans and FSIS policy for addressing the medical monitoring needs of the program units and employees serviced.
  • Administer FSIS’s Safety, Health, Environmental programs.

Job Requirements:

  • Selectee must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance. If selected you may be subject to an investigation. Failure to successfully meet these requirements could lead to adverse action proceedings including possible termination.
  • Experience in establishing procedures for the systematic identification and testing of employees whose work assignments involve exposure to known and unknown communicable diseases, and other occupational related illnesses, including those afflicting animals.

  • Experience in planning and developing an Agency Safety, Health and Environmental program.
  • May be subject to satisfactory completion of one year probationary or trial period.
  • Experience in skill in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating a nationwide medical monitoring program in clinical and other occupational environments or commercial industry establishments.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Experience in managing and reviewing pre-employment medical documentation and making formal determinations.
