Job Description:

It is the primary objective of the Centre for Student Counselling and Development (CSCD) to be focused on student wellness and development. The CSCD consists of four units and delivers an integrated, professional, client centred service that focuses on support and development. This position is based at the Unit for Academic Counselling and Development and will be focusing primarily on service delivery to students registered for the Extended Degree Programmes (EDP) at the University.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Providing academic support;
  • Rendering psychological support services to students who are registered for the Extended Degree Programme (EDP) of Stellenbosch University;
  • Case management of EDP students (may include needs analysis and appropriate referral to other services on campus, e.g. to social services);
  • Developmental work (including work sessions, for example, about study methods, time management, stress management and exam preparation);
  • Providing career counselling;
  • Report writing; Developing intervention programmes (may include applicable referrals);
  • Following up on referrals made by Faculty support staff;
  • Developing and implementing a support model for EDP students.
  • Making a diagnosis (if applicable);
  • Conducting intake interviews;
  • Individual and group psychotherapy;

Job Requirements:

  • The ability to work under pressure;
  • An independent worker;
  • Experience in psychotherapy for adolescents and young adults;
  • Registration as educational or counselling psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa;
  • Master’s degree in Educational Psychology, e.g. MEdPsych or MA in Counselling Psychology or equivalent qualification;
  • Computer proficiency;
  • Transparent and effective communication styles;
  • Empathetic;
  • Punctual.
  • The ability to work according to a fixed schedule in a structured environment and deliver a quality service;
  • Experience in group facilitation; Psychosocial support to a diverse client population;
  • The ability to work effectively in a team;
  • Conscientious;
  • At least twelve months relevant experience in academic counselling at a higher education institution or with adolescents in a high school environment;
  • Successful completion of a module in career guidance / occupational psychology at Master’s level;
