Job Description:

UC San Diego Temporary Employment Services (TES) places employees in departments that have immediate staffing needs. Assignment locations include the UC San Diego campus, the UC San Diego Hospital in Hillcrest, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the Thornton and Veteran’s Administration Hospitals, and a variety of UC San Diego satellite locations.

Job Responsibilities:

• Performs processing of hazardous waste materials including: segregation, compaction, vial crushing, solidification, recycling/reuse, lab-packing, consolidation, storage for radioactive decay, marking and labeling shipping containers and preparation of shipping documents and transportation.

Job Requirements:

• Graduation from high school or a GED and one (1) year of experience in an environmental health and safety program, or two (2) years of college including appropriate science courses; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
• Demonstrated ability to safely negotiate trucks around campus and city streets while transporting hazardous waste.
• Ability to move or lift large chemical drums, carboys, bottles boxes etc.
• Ability to safely operate all equipment at the EMF including trucks and lift gates, forklift, hand trucks, pallet jacks, carts and other lifting aids.
• Ability to handle routine administrative matters without close supervision.
• Ability to organize, work independently, exercising good judgement, take initiative, set priorities, meet deadlines and schedule tasks to complete projects effectively and efficiently with high attention to detail and accuracy.
• Good oral communication skills necessary to effectively negotiate hazardous waste disposal and relate technical information to a diverse clientele. Professional and gracious telephone manner.
• Strong interpersonal skills to interact with all members of the Environmental Management Team, EH&S staff, Waste Generators and other members of the UC San Diego community.
