Peace Corps Jobs – English Education Specialist (Namibia)

Job Description:

A Peace Corps Response Volunteer (PCRV) is needed to serve as an English Education Specialist working on curriculum and materials design with the Namibia Ministry of Education Arts and Culture in the Oshikoto region. The majority of learners in southern Africa receive their education through the medium of a second language, English. Namibia, as part of the southern Africa region, has also adopted the use English as a medium of instruction in schools. The revised curriculum updates the learning model to reflect the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to succeed as citizens in the 21st Century. With the new curriculum, students and teachers are expected to improve English proficiency. The PCRV will be supporting the implementation of the current revised English curriculum through material design and curriculum development for primary and secondary schools. Among other duties, the PCRV will co-facilitate, with Senior Education Officers, English training workshops for English teachers in the region and help with the development of supplementary materials and resources including audio, videos, teacher tool kits, student resource kits and dialogue scripts.

To be qualified for this position, applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in education (English Concentration, 3 – 5 years of experience in public school teaching, and experience training adult learners are needed to support these efforts. The Volunteer also must have a willingness to approach the position through the Peace Corps’ approach to development. The overall goal of this assignment is to improve the English instruction and proficiency of students and teachers in Namibia.

Qualification & Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in education (English concentration)
• 3 -5 years of public school teaching experience
• Experience working with high school/primary school curriculum design
• Experience in training adult learners
