Job Description: The Department seeks an experienced veterinarian to join our dynamic team tasked with enhancing animal production and welfare, ruminant health, community and environmental health. This person will focus on the teaching and research in fields related to the Clinical and Herd/Flock health of domestic livestock species kept for production (with particular emphasis on cattle, sheep and goats). Job Responsibilities: Academic self-development. Networking with relevant industry stakeholders; Teaching and practical training of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students in clinical & herd/flock health and management of production animal species; The successful candidate will be expected to actively recruit additional clientele to fulfil this mandate; Community engagement – participation and supporting student activities; Postgraduate training and supervision where appropriate; Clinical and herd/flock health services through the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital, surrounding community and satellite clinics, including participation in a 24-hour service; Administrative and other duties as delegated by the Head of Department; and Research and publication in scientific journals; Job Requirements: Proven knowledge and competence in veterinary clinical work; Good language and communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills; Skills in herd or population level problem investigation, management interventions and consultation; Generic teaching competence including proficiency with presentation, word-processing and spreadsheet software. Candidates without a PhD: Commitment to obtain a PhD in reasonable time; Research interest appropriate to the position; Qualification & Experience: PhD with particular focus on production animals; Eight years of veterinary experience of practicing in predominantly ruminant practice; A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification; Experience with post-graduate student supervision; and Registration with the SAVC as a specialist or eligibility for registration through peer-review process; At least ten full peer reviewed papers in accredited scientific journals as senior or co-author and must have at least graduated MSc and/or PhD students..
