CSIR Jobs – Programme Manager

Job Description:

The CSIR has a vacancy for a Programme Manager: ESTB in the Energy Centre within the Smart Places cluster. The incumbent will be responsible to manage the CSIR Energy Storage Testbed for supporting energy storage testing and development in the CSIR Energy Centre. The role will further provide strategic and technical leadership of the platform (researchers and engineers with specialised domain expertise in specific areas of competence), including people management, business development in collaboration with the Centre Manager, Business Development Manager; financial sustainability and operations management.

Job Responsibilities:

• Provide leadership in the integration of the platform with other functions and programs to ensure alignment in the field of energy storage across Clusters and Divisions
• Create a platform for the integration of CSIR, Centre and Cluster research projects and pilots into the Program – creating and maintaining a testing and demonstration platform
• Lead projects (life cycles and related systems) and oversee the implementation thereof
• Provide leadership in the provision of technical solutions in the areas of energy storage as include battery energy storage and other storage technologies (e.g. mechanical, thermal, chemical)
• Conduct business development (strategic partnerships, donors and funders) initiatives and ensure financial sustainability for the Program;
• Develop and ongoing maintenance/enhancement of a funding plan for the Program
• Service strategic research alliances, industry, and service areas and interacting with stakeholders, directly supporting and enabling the development of a local renewable energy and energy storage industry
• Lead and develop researchers or engineers or project managers in the Program, and providing leadership to staff, aiming at stimulating growth and ensuring alignment with the Centre strategy focus
• Manage strategic investment, planning and implementing Special Initiative Parliamentary Grant, Contract R&D and other grant-funded opportunities for Implementation in the Program
• Manage strategic stakeholder relationship for the Program to secure appropriate, joint projects implemented in the Program including R&D elements for piloting and testing energy storage technologies in the Program
• Develop and Implement the Program RDI strategy, which is responsive to the CSIR RDI strategy

Job Requirements:

• A Master’s degree in science or engineering domain or equivalent
• Communication, presentation, research and report writing skills
• An understanding of the research to market ‘innovation’ value chain
• Experience in managing budgets and executing capital projects greater than R5m
• At least five years’ experience in energy storage technologies and the integration of renewable energy
• Problem-solving; facilitation and interpersonal skills in a goal-oriented approach
• Business case, business plan and financial modelling acumen
• At least five years’ experience in project and program management
• Appropriate national and international RDI networks
• Ability to provide thought leadership and high-level conceptualisation
• Proven track record in project management and program management leadership
