CSIR Internship 2023 – Research Scientist

Job Description:

The CSIR has a vacancy for a Senior Research and Development Engineer/Scientist: Cloud and Network Architectures in the Cloud, Network Architectures and Services Research Group within the Next Generation Enterprises and Institutions Cluster. The incumbent will be responsible for undertaking research, development and implementation on various processes, systems, products, services, and tools relating to Software-Defined Networking (SDN), Network Functions Virtualisation, 5G, Internet of Things (IoT), Network Slicing and Cloud Computing in Research and Development (R&D) environment, with the aim to develop advanced and emerging Cloud and Network Architecture solutions for the industry. This position is based in Pretoria.

Job Responsibilities:

• Support new avenues of knowledge application in Cloud and Network Architectures, develop proposals to internal/external clients and source research funding
• Manage/Lead a portfolio of R&D projects, often integrating approaches across several fields of research or disciplines
• Manage research on SDN/NFV, 5G, Network Slicing and Cloud Computing as a specialist in this field(s), and work on the analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation of new and/or legacy systems/subsystems/products/processes/patents/services/tools and other technology within the Cloud and Network Architecture field
• Direct the integration of various areas of research in Cloud and Network Architecture in order to develop new technology offerings and improve existing technology offerings
• Liaise with clients and other stakeholders to ensure that the outcomes of projects meet the needs of the stakeholders
• Guide research and development projects relating to Cloud and Network Architectures, troubleshoot problems, and direct implementation of
• Cloud and Network Architecture projects according to best practice
• Manage junior team members and support project team members through input on technical aspects, advice, guidance and coaching
• Understand and respond to the needs and requirements of clients

Job Requirements:

• Knowledge of digital signal processing and/or pattern recognition and/or machine learning and/or artificial intelligence
• Formal Cloud and Network Architectures related studies/courses/experience would be advantageous
• Must have experience with Open-Source development tools and an excellent understanding of the Linux OS
• A Doctoral degree or equivalent will be advantageous
• Knowledge in Project management
• Knowledge of various virtualisation tools and telecommunication over cloud would be advantageous
• A Master’s degree in electronic/computer engineering, computer science, or a related/relevant field with at least five years’ experience in SDN/NFV, 5G, IoT, Network Slicing and Cloud Computing research or in relevant/related research and/or software development
• Proficiency in Matlab, and/or, Python and/or Java
• Demonstrated experience in other generations of mobile networks (e.g., 4G)
• Good communication skills (verbal and written) and ability to interact efficiently with diverse teams of people (researchers, customers, developers and engineers)
• Strong analytical skills including good mathematical and statistical ability
• Must enjoy working on the core/lower levels of systems and be able to develop good core level software
• All international qualifications require an evaluation report / certificate issued by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA)
