Job Description:

As Assistant Parliamentary Clerk you will help ensure written Parliamentary questions are answered in a timely fashion and other commitments to Parliament such as laying and depositing official documents are met. You will also support the delivery of secondary legislation and provide support on mailbox management and parliamentary-based research. You will be responsible for ensuring that ministers have high quality briefing for their parliamentary engagement as well as play a key role in supporting the department’s parliamentary work.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Office administration such as mailbox management and organising parliamentary passes for officials
  • Commissioning ministerial briefings for parliamentary activity such as oral questions, debates, and select committees; and assisting in coordinating written parliamentary question processes
  • Working with teams across the department and supporting the Deputy Parliamentary Clerk and Head of the Parliamentary Team in delivering high quality outputs, and ensuring DCMS meets its responsibilities to Parliament
  • Laying and depositing papers before Parliament
  • Conducting research and producing detailed, well drafted and timely written materials, often to tight deadlines
  • Ensuring robust processes are followed, and contributing to the wider corporate work of the department
  • Assisting with managing the department’s relationships with the Parliamentary Business and Legislation Committee, and parliamentary select committees
  • Acting as a key point of contact for advice and enquiries about parliamentary matters, providing accurate and authoritative procedural advice
  • Taking a key role in the delivery of the department’s secondary legislation programme

Job Requirements:

  • Experience or knowledge of working across Government or with Parliament
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent IT skills and knowledge of MS Office and Google
  • Strong judgement to manage issues independently and understand when to escalate and how
  • Ability to work flexibly and overcome challenges, often under considerable time pressure, and deliver high quality outputs
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure, manage competing priorities, and work at pace to a high standard
  • Excellent organisation, prioritisation, time management and relationship building skills
